His and Hers Skis

Business travel has been on the schedule a bit more this year, but at least the kids are easier to care for these days. There's a lot of reading and coloring happening, which is pretty awesome for Mom.

To mark a successful (albeit long) week without Dad, the kids wanted some frozen yogurt. I abstained because cold desserts are just unappetizing to me when it's 20 degrees outside. But the kids had no qualms about it whatsoever!

Finally, the sun came out this weekend, and I was itching to get outside after being home with the kids by myself all week. On Friday, I took Hadley downhill skiing at Kelly Canyon, while Owen was in school. It was doubly awesome because it was Ladies' Day (discount lift and lunch for me), and she's in the 'free' category because of her age. I even got the rentals for free! It was a win-win-win. However, she may have been most happy about the pre-ski snack at the lodge.

After the snack, she conquered the tow rope and braved the lift with me. The beginner hill was pretty long (or at least it seemed that way). I'd lead a few slow turns and stop, then she'd follow. She did fantastic! After our meticulous trip down the mountain, we decided it was time for lunch. And then she was done. Ha! But she did ask when we could go again (with Owen), so I'll take that as success.
The next day I took Owen to cross-country ski in Harriman State Park, which I've wanted to do all winter. It looked a lot different than when we were here in September. They were having a ranger-led snowshoe/ski nature walk to look for the first signs of spring, so we joined that excursion. The hills presented a bit of a challenge on skis, but he kept picking himself up and continuing on. I think we did about a 1.5-mile loop, but I'd love to go back and do a longer trip someday.

I'm afraid other than some thawing of the river, there weren't many signs of spring. But the trumpeter swans were plentiful and really added to the scenery. In one area, we counted 18 swans all swimming/eating together. I'm so glad I got to have one-on-one adventures with both kids this weekend!
